Swedish adventures in unique nature

The “right to roam" creates fantastic opportunities to enjoy Sweden's characteristic landscapes. Lace up your hiking boots, pack your backpack and camp wherever you like - unforgettable adventures await.

Exploring Scandinavian Nature

From the rolling hills and varied coastal environments in the south to the majestic mountain ranges, bogs, and mountain lakes in the north, Scandinavian nature is truly one of a kind. But the ability to explore it on your own also sets Scandinavia apart from many other places in the world. Here you can lace up your boots, bring your stove and tent and live in and by nature for days or weeks on end.

Enjoy & protect nature

The right to roam gives us the freedom and opportunity to experience all that Sweden has to offer – on foot or by bike, canoe, or skis. You can move freely in the wilderness, pick berries and mushrooms, and take a dip in a stream or lake along the way. But of course, it is also important to respect both nature and landowners wherever you are. For example, be careful not to disturb wild animals and plants. Don't pick protected flowers or break tree branches. And everything you bring into nature should be brought back out with you so that you leave nature in the same or even better condition than you found it. Be sure to follow local regulations, especially in nature reserves and national parks or where reindeer graze. And last but not least, hike on marked trails and pitch your tent at designated sites so that you can be sure not to put unnecessary strain on nature.

There are over 400 hiking trails to explore in Sweden. You can enjoy the national parks and unique nature of Skåne on the Skåneleden, the barren, rocky landscape of the west coast on the Bohusleden or the primeval forest of Tiveden on the Bergslagsleden. Further north, there is of course the 440-kilometer-long Kungsleden that stretches from Hemavan in the south to Abisko in the north. But you can also enjoy less visited hiking trails such as the Treparksmötet where the national parks Sarek, Padjelanta, and Stora Sjöfallet meet. Thanks to its high quality and unique nature, the trail is one of the Swedish Tourist Association's fourteen Signature Trails.

Camp (almost) anywhere you like

When you want to discover nature in Sweden, the possibilities are virtually endless. And there's something very special about being able to pitch your tent and light your stove right next to a calm mountain lake or a babbling brook. If you don't have your own tent, it's perfectly possible to spend the night in a shelter along the road or sleep in one of the more than 200 overnight cabins that can be found all over Sweden, from Skåne to Norrbotten. They're also completely free, so it's first come, first served.

Staying overnight is a highlight of the tour. The opportunity to cook and gaze into the dancing flames of the fire is another. Under normal circumstances, it's okay to make a fire in the Swedish countryside and there are thousands of fireplaces and shelters available for this purpose. However, during dry periods, fires may be prohibited even at established fire sites. It is important to respect these bans as forest fires have devastating consequences for nature, animals, and landowners. If you want to be absolutely sure that you will be able to cook hot and tasty food on your adventure, it is usually permitted to light a camp stove, regardless of where in Sweden you are and what time of year you’re out. After all, adventures require tasty and well-prepared food!
